To Live and Die with Honor: The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (about 15 min.)

This 15 minute video tells the story of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising through the voices of the survivors of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Two Canadian fighters – Anna Heilman (of Ottawa) & Baruch Spiegel (of Montreal)- appear in the film. Both took part in the heroic uprising and their testimony in the film is quite eloquent.

Anna Heilman, who passed away in 2011, took part in the 1994 March of the Living. Her sister, Esther Wajcblum, was executed by the Nazis in January 1945 for taking part in the revolt to destroy Crematoria Number 4. Baruch Speigel is the last know survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in Canada and will be speaking next week at the Yom Hashoah Commemoration in Montreal on April 7th, organized by The Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre

The film premiered at the Warsaw University last. night in front of 1,000 March of the Living participants with the Canadian Ambassador in attendance. A shorter version of the film will be shown at the central March of the Living ceremony in Auschwitz-Birkenau on Yom Hashoah to all 10,000 participants and will also be broadcast around the world, live via the internet.

Sources for the film include the Shoah Archives and From Despair to Defiance: The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, ” a film that was released 10 years ago, to mark the 60th Anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. The film was directed by Canadian David Kaufman and is the only full length English documentary on the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
