Telling the Story through Art: Holocaust Art as a Primary Source
In our continuing webinar series, the International March of the Living hosted a lecture October 29, 2020 with Holocaust Educator Liz Elsby. Focusing on individual artworks, Elsby demonstrated how exploring the artistic aspects of each painting, together with the context in which they were created and the questions they raise, combine to deepen our understanding of the Holocaust as a human event.(Click on the video player below to watch the full program) Liz Elsby made Aliya from the United States in 1984 and has worked for Yad Vashem as a Holocaust educator and museum guide since 2006. She guides educational groups in Poland, Prague, Terezin and Berlin for various organizations including March of the Living, as well as teaches about the Holocaust to teachers in the United States through Yad Vashem and Echoes and Reflections. When Liz is not guiding or teaching, she continues her own learning. She traveled to Vilna to enrich her knowledge of both pre-war and present-day Jewish Life. In 2016, she participated in a five-day course to become an accredited guide in the Polin Museum in Warsaw.Liz is also an illustrator and children’s book author. She is currently illustrating both a children’s book she wrote about pre-war Krakow, and a book of the poems of the child poet, Hanus Hachenberg, which he wrote while imprisoned in Terezin.To view and download the list of artwork featured in Liz’s presentation, please click here.

Survivor Speaker Series: Mala Tribich, MBE, United Kingdom
International March of the Living’s inaugural “When you listen to a witness, you become a witness” Survivor Speaker Series debuted on Wednesday, September 30, 2020. The program featured Mala Tribich, MBE, from the United Kingdom, in an inspirational Q & A with Founder and Chairman of March of the Living UK, Scott Saunders. Click on the video player below to watch the full program. Mala’s story is one of incredible strength, sadness and resilience. Born in 1930 in Piotrkow, Poland, Mala survived horrific conditions in the ghetto and was hidden in Czestochowa. She was later deported to Ravensbruck Concentration Camp and ultimately was liberated by the British Army from Bergen Belsen in 1945 at the age of just 14. To her complete shock, her brother Ben had survived the war, and they reunited in England several years later.Mala was honored by the Queen with an MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) and currently lives in London.

RESISTANCE: Conversation with Jesse Eisenberg + Jonathan Jakubowicz
The International March of the Living kicked off our new webinar series on Tuesday, August 18, 2020 with a conversation about the film Resistance with its star Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) and director and screenwriter Jonathan Jakubowicz (Hands of Stone, Secuestro Express). The program was moderated by Dana Arschin, 2X Emmy Award-Winning reporter for Fox 5 News in NY, and March of the Living 2018 alumna. The film is based on the true story of legendary mime Marcel Marceau, who put his fledgling career as an artist on hold to spirit Jewish refugee children out of Nazi-occupied France, even as his own father was murdered at Auschwitz.For both Jonathan and Jesse, the story of Marceau is not an aberration, but familiar. Their lineage is filled with both survivors and victims of the Holocaust. Jonathan feels lucky to have been able to make a movie like this and recognizes that the difference was often a Marceau: not a larger-than-life figure, but one of those civilian heroes who uses what they have to save a stranger. Jesse Eisenberg wants people to know that “Every survivor’s story requires some kind of miracle, and some selfless person putting their life on the line.” “The importance of recognizing the courage of those who risk their lives to save the lives of others is an important message to impart to the next generation.
