Steven Sotloff, Beheaded Journalist, Grandson of Holocaust Survivors

Steven Sotloff’s parents Shirley and Art Sotloff, 60 Minutes, CBS NEWS

60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl interviews the parents of Steven Sotloff, the American-Israeli journalist who was kidnapped in Aleppo, Syria in August 2013. Sotloff, the grandson of Holocaust survivors, was held captive by members of ISIS/ISIL including Mohammed Emwazi (aka Jihadi John), who demanded a $100 million ransom from the U.S. government (and for all Muslim prisoners to be freed). One year later, in September 2014, ISIL released a video of Sotloff’s beheading. Sotloff’s parents oppose the U.S. policy of not negotiating with terrorists.

When a clip of the 60 Minutes interview was posted on the show’s Facebook page, the majority of the comments start with condolences “I’m sorry for their loss” but agree with the policy not to negotiate with terrorists. As Howard Peter Brody wrote: “If we agreed to pay and their son was released, imagine how many others would die from $100 million in ISIS purchased weaponry.” 60 Minutes airs Sundays at 7pm on CBS.
