The Sunflower

On the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness

by Simon Wiesenthal

While imprisoned in a concentration camp, Simon Wiesenthal was brought to the bedside of a dying SS soldier who asked a Jewish prisoner — any Jewish prisoner — for forgiveness. Wiesenthal said nothing, and spent the rest of his life asking whether that was right. The second half of the book puts the question to theologians, writers, and fellow survivors, who answer it very differently.
